FCI4Africa Open Call 1 – Funding Research and Technology for Climate-Neutral Trade Systems

Overview

The FCI4Africa Open Call 1 (OC1) provides financial support to research and technology stakeholders to strengthen fair, sustainable, climate‑neutral, and health‑promoting trade systems in Africa’s agricultural sector. With a total budget of €400,000, the call will fund 8 sub‑projects, each receiving up to €50,000.

Objectives

Applicants are invited to contribute to one of the following:

  • Objective 1: Test, validate, and enhance existing business concepts and tools developed within FCI4Africa use cases.
  • Objective 2: Develop new ideas and tools that address specific challenges of FCI4Africa.

All funded projects must generate datasets that refine tools, methodologies, and business concepts.

  • Budget: €400,000 total; up to €50,000 per sub‑project
  • Number of Projects: 8 sub‑projects funded
  • Applicants: Only single applicants (no consortia)

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include:

  • Universities and research institutes
  • Technology developers and R&D SMEs
  • Innovation‑driven start‑ups
  • Other multidisciplinary actors in research and technology

Timeline

  • Launch: 7 April 2026
  • Deadline: 30 June 2026 (17:00 CEST, Brussels time)
  • Implementation: November 2026 – October 2027
    • Phase 1 (Design): Nov 2026 – Jan 2027 (3 months) → Activity plan
    • Phase 2 (Development): Feb – Jul 2027 (6 months) → Results demonstration
    • Phase 3 (Validation): Aug – Oct 2027 (3 months) → Dissemination report & lessons learnt

Application Process

  • Submit proposals digitally via the opencalls.fund platform before the deadline.
  • By applying, applicants accept the terms and conditions outlined in the Open Call 1 Kit.
  • Supporting documents include proposal template, budget template, declaration of honour, SME declaration, and model sub‑grant agreement.
