The Africa Earth Observation (AEO) Challenge is a pan-African open innovation competition launched in 2016. It aims to drive entrepreneurship and promote the use of Earth Observation Data (EOD) across various sectors.

What is Earth Observation?

Earth Observation refers to the remote sensing and collection of information about Earth’s physical, chemical, and biological systems, commonly through satellite-based technologies. It supports monitoring environmental changes and informing decisions across industries.

Who Can Apply?

  • Businesses based anywhere in Africa

  • Startups or early-stage ventures that are investor-ready
    (Technology Readiness Level 8 or 9 and Business Readiness Level 1–3)

  • Solutions must clearly demonstrate application of Earth Observation Data

Thematic Areas for 2025

Submissions must focus on one or more of the following:

  • Climate Change

  • Agriculture

  • Disaster Risk Reduction

  • Natural Resource Monitoring

  • Sustainable Urban/Rural Development

  • Healthcare

  • Navigation and Positioning

Innovative data collection techniques, such as new satellites, onboard processing units, and in-situ measurements, are also encouraged across all themes.

  • Submit your application through the official portal

  • Ensure your solution addresses one or more of the listed thematic areas and clearly integrates Earth Observation Data
