The RELX Environmental Challenge awards innovative projects that advance sustainable access to safe water and improved sanitation. First-place winners receive USD 50,000, while runners-up receive USD 25,000, plus one-year complimentary access to ScienceDirect’s full-text Environmental Sciences database.
Who Should Apply
• Not-for-profit or for-profit organisations and individuals
• Projects must address communities where water or sanitation is at risk, with clear health, education or human-rights linkages
Assessment Criteria
• Replicability, scalability and long-term sustainability
• Practical applicability and innovation benchmark
• Equity of access and non-discrimination
• Local and community-level engagement
• Meaningful involvement of diverse stakeholders
Early-stage initiatives with high potential for impact are especially encouraged to apply.

Application Process
- Prepare a concise project summary detailing objectives, target communities, methodology, stakeholder engagement and sustainability plan.
- Submit your application via the RELX portal before the deadline.
- Applications shortlisted by the advisory group will undergo external expert review before winners are selected.
Deadline
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; early submission is advised. For the current cycle, submit your proposal by 30 September 2025.
