Overview

The Curt Bergfors Food Planet Prize is the world’s largest environmental award, recognizing transformative initiatives within the global food system. In 2026, the Prize will award USD $1.5 million to the winner and USD $150,000 to each finalist.

Because nothing impacts the environment more than the way we eat, the Prize exclusively honors projects that accelerate change in food systems to ensure sustainability and resilience.

What Makes the Prize Unique

  • Future‑focused: Unlike many awards, the Food Planet Prize prioritizes initiatives that will succeed if given the chance, rather than only those that have already succeeded.
  • Holistic approach: The Prize evaluates projects across the entire food value chain, ensuring representation from science, policy, business, and practical food work.
  • Inclusive jury: Farmers, chefs, scientists, and policymakers all carry equal weight in deciding the winner.

Prize Process

  1. Nomination submission – Open year‑round via the official website. To maximize chances for the next cycle, submit before May 2026.
  2. Evaluation – About 1,000 nominations are reviewed annually. Initiatives are placed into a 400‑grid system representing geography, innovation type, and food system segment.
  3. Longlist – Top 50 initiatives undergo deeper evaluation, including interviews and impact assessments.
  4. Shortlist – Around 10 candidates are selected for due diligence, scientific reviews, and independent field reporting.
  5. Final jury vote – Shortlisted initiatives present in person to the jury in Sweden. The board makes the final decision.
  6. Award ceremony – Winner announced and celebrated globally.
