The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Program (SGP) supports community-led initiatives that address global environmental challenges while improving local livelihoods. Since 1992, SGP has funded over 28,000 projects across 136 countries, contributing to sustainable development and environmental protection.

Funding Details

  • Grants up to $75,000 for community-based projects.

  • Strategic projects up to $150,000 for scaling up successful initiatives.

  • Focus on civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), women, Indigenous Peoples, and youth.

Program Focus Areas

  • Sustainable agriculture and land management

  • Biodiversity conservation

  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation

  • Water and energy access

  • Innovation and local environmental solutions

Eligibility

  • Local CSOs, CBOs, and other grassroots organizations.

  • Projects must deliver global environmental benefits while improving livelihoods.

  • Preference given to initiatives led by women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples.

Implementation

  • Managed by UNDP, FAO, and Conservation International (CI).

  • GEF SGP 2.0 emphasizes innovation, diversification, and inclusive local action, with new initiatives like the CSO Challenge Program and a Microfinance Initiative launching in 2024.
