The Rainforest Alliance invites applications for the Kleinhans Fellowship for Community Forestry Research, a program that supports innovative research to strengthen community forest enterprises (CFEs) and promote sustainable forestry management.

Fellowship Focus

The fellowship funds research that develops practical, science-based solutions to real challenges faced by forest communities, including:

  • Markets for lesser-known species and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) – Exploring how communities can create viable markets for diverse forest products.

  • Biodiversity management practices – Studying ways to balance conservation with economic viability.

  • Social organization and governance – Investigating how CFEs can improve transparency, equity, and management.

  • Multi-community enterprises – Assessing cooperative business models for forest-based enterprises.

Geographic Scope

Applicants from any country, including Ghana, are eligible. However, the research must take place in Latin America.

 Funding Support
  • Grant Amount: USD $20,000 per year for two years

  • Use of Funds: Supports research activities (not tuition or vehicle purchases)

Eligibility

Applicants should be:

  • Graduate-level researchers in forestry, ecology, botany, environmental science, or related fields

  • Preferably doctoral or post-doctoral candidates (relevant experience may substitute for degree level)
