The Moonshots for Development (M4D), powered by IFAD and partners, invites innovators in Ghana and other eligible countries to pilot solutions that strengthen rural livelihoods and build resilient food systems.
This Open Innovation Challenge focuses on solutions for smallholder farmers, rural communities, and indigenous populations, with a strong emphasis on agriculture, agroecology, digital extension, insurance, and climate resilience.
Challenge Tracks

Insurance Solutions for Resilient Food Systems – Develop digital or cost-effective crop, livestock, or climate insurance platforms for smallholder farmers.

Reducing the Drivers of Fragility – Innovations that strengthen rural community resilience in fragile contexts and tackle root causes of vulnerability.

Digital Extension for Accountable Service Delivery – Digital tools to improve agricultural advisory services, farmer outreach, and local institution effectiveness.

Agroecology for Productive, Climate-Resilient Systems – Sustainable farming practices, bio-inputs, soil restoration, integrated resource management, and market access solutions.
Cross-Cutting Opportunities

AI for Good: Apply AI to enhance prediction, modeling, advisory services, or data interpretation.

Geospatial Analysis: Leverage satellite or remote sensing data for climate-smart and context-sensitive solutions.
Funding and Support
Selected teams may receive up to $360,000 USD across several phases:

Phase 0: Virtual bootcamp and one-month mentorship.

Phase 1: Up to $10,000 USD, tailored coaching, and access to M4D networks.

Phase 2: Up to $100,000 USD, pilot and implementation support.

Phase 3: Up to $250,000 USD, scaling support for successful enterprises.
Eligibility

Projects must be implemented in Ghana or other eligible low- and middle-income countries.

Teams should focus on innovations benefiting smallholder farmers and rural households.

Solutions must be context-appropriate, considering internet connectivity, feature phone use, and local agricultural practices.
