Scale Your Agricultural Impact with the GEF Small Grants Programme

Since 1992, the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (SGP) has empowered local communities to “think globally and act locally.” Under the current GEF-8 cycle (SGP 2.0), the program continues to provide financial and technical support to civil society organizations (CSOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs), with a strong emphasis on Indigenous Peoples, women, and youth.

For Ghanaian agricultural innovators, NGOs, and farmer groups, this is a unique opportunity to access resources that strengthen food systems, restore ecosystems, and improve rural livelihoods.

Agricultural Relevance

The program directly supports agric-related priorities:

• Sustainable agriculture and food security – promoting climate-smart farming, resilient food systems, and community-led solutions.
• Community-based ecosystem management – protecting biodiversity, restoring degraded lands, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.
• Low-carbon energy access – enabling rural households and farming communities to adopt clean energy solutions that reduce costs and improve productivity.

These areas align closely with Ghana’s agricultural innovation agenda and provide pathways for farmers and NGOs to scale their impact.

Funding Opportunities

• Core Grants: Up to $75,000 for community-led agric and environmental projects.
• Strategic Projects: Up to $150,000 to replicate and scale successful approaches across multiple communities.
• CSO Challenge Program: Grants of up to $300,000, plus technical support and capacity-building, to expand high-impact solutions.

Ghana is among the 135 participating countries in GEF-8, with nearly $1 million allocated for local initiatives. This ensures equitable access for Ghanaian organizations regardless of size or previous participation.

Current Call for Proposals

The CSO Challenge Program is now open, with applications due July 31, 2026. Projects must align with one of five priority areas:

• Community-based ecosystem management
• Sustainable agriculture and food security
• Low-carbon energy access
• Chemicals and waste management
• Sustainable urban solutions

This call is global, inclusive, and designed to reduce barriers to participation, with multilingual resources available throughout the process.

Since inception, SGP has supported nearly 30,000 grants worldwide, channeling $1.54 billion to local communities. In Ghana, these resources can help:

• Restore degraded farmlands and ecosystems.
