Hokkaido University offers several competitive scholarships for international students wishing to pursue their studies in Japan. These opportunities include Japanese Government Scholarships (MEXT), Hokkaido University Scholarships, and various external scholarships.

1. Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships

Monthly stipend amounts:

  • Undergraduate students: ¥117,000/month (¥120,000 in winter)

  • Research students: ¥143,000/month (¥146,000 in winter)

  • Master’s students: ¥144,000/month (¥147,000 in winter)

  • Doctoral students: ¥145,000/month (¥148,000 in winter)

Application pathways:

  • Embassy Recommendation: Apply through Japanese Embassies/Consulates in your home country.

  • University Recommendation: Applicants screened and nominated by Hokkaido University; must have an academic score of at least 2.30/3.00 and meet language ability requirements.

  • Domestic Selection: Limited scholarships for privately financed international students already in Japan (not offered every year).

2. Hokkaido University Special Grant Program

Designed for self-supported international students entering doctoral programs in select graduate schools:

  • Veterinary Medicine

  • Environmental Science

  • Chemical Sciences and Engineering

  • Infectious Diseases

Recipients receive a tuition waiver in exchange for working as a Research Assistant. Applicants must demonstrate excellent academic performance and the potential for international research impact.


3. Other Scholarships

Several external scholarship opportunities are available, including:

  • JICA Scholarship: For participants accepted by the university to support human resource development in their home countries.

  • China Scholarship Council (CSC) Program: Provides financial support for Chinese students studying abroad.
