The Food Planet Challenge: Rethinking How We Feed the World

What’s the Problem?
Our current food system is the single most damaging human activity to the planet. Unlike other choices, we cannot stop eating—but how we produce, process, and consume food is pushing Earth beyond safe environmental limits. Transforming our food systems is critical to ensure a well-nourished population on a thriving planet.

Planetary Boundaries:
Human activity can only alter the environment within certain limits to avoid irreversible damage. Scientists have identified nine critical boundaries, six of which we have already surpassed:

  • Chemical pollution & novel entities: Plastics and toxins in food packaging are dangerously high.

  • Climate change: Agriculture is the largest greenhouse gas emitter.

  • Biosphere integrity: Biodiversity is collapsing due to monocultures and habitat loss.

  • Land-system change: Forests and wetlands are converted to farmland, releasing carbon and driving species loss.

  • Freshwater use: Agriculture consumes the majority of freshwater, threatening future availability.

  • Biogeochemical flows: Excess nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers cause water pollution and dead zones.

Other boundaries like ozone depletion, ocean acidification, and atmospheric aerosols are under pressure but can be managed with urgent action.

Why It Matters:
Food is intrinsically linked to all nine boundaries. By redesigning food systems—through sustainable farming, reducing waste, and consuming more planet-friendly diets—we can bring the planet back within its safe operating space.

Take Action:
The Food Planet Challenge invites you to nominate yourself or others working to reshape food systems. It only takes three minutes and could help create a future where people and the planet thrive together.
