Master by Research & PhD Programmes

The University of Malta invites high-achieving international students (non‑EU/EEA) to apply for competitive scholarships for postgraduate research degrees. These scholarships offer tuition fee waivers ranging from 40% to 100%, awarded based on academic merit and research potential. The waivers apply for the normal duration of the program. However, optional bench or laboratory fees may still be applicable.

Who’s Eligible?

• Non‑EU/EEA nationals

• Students who have received an unconditional offer for a Master by Research or PhD, either full-time or part-time

• Professional doctorates and MBA-style programmes are not eligible

How to Apply

1. Apply for admission and obtain an unconditional offer from the University of Malta.

2. Submit a separate scholarship request to the International Office. This should include:

   • Your University of Malta Applicant ID

   • A current CV

   • A motivation letter

   • A copy of your unconditional acceptance letter

   • A copy of your passport

Selection Criteria

• Academic excellence

• Research potential

• Merit-based ranking by the University of Malta Scholarships Selection Board, which determines whether a full or partial waiver is granted

• Bench fees, if applicable, are not covered by the scholarship

Deadlines and Duration

• Scholarship applications should be submitted only after receiving an unconditional admission offer

• Application deadlines typically fall on 31 January, 31 May, and 31 October, depending on the intake period

• Scholarships cover only the standard duration of the programme; extensions may not be eligible for funding
