The University of Manitoba offers the UMGF annually to full-time graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and intellectual ability.

Award Value:
Master’s: $20,000/year (up to 2 years)
Doctoral: $25,000/year (up to 4 years)

Duration:
Master’s: 12 or 24 months
Doctoral: 12, 24, 36, or 48 months

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (departments may require higher)

  • Open to students of all nationalities

  • Must be admitted to and enrolled full-time in an eligible Master’s or PhD program

  • Program must be eligible for Tri-Agency funding

  • Must not have an admission hold or be receiving another award of equal or higher value

  • Must show strong research potential

  • Cannot change department/program while receiving the award

  • Cannot exceed four years of total UMGF funding

Master’s Students
0 months in program – 24 months of funding
1–12 months – 12 months of funding
13+ months – Not eligible

PhD Students
0 months in program – 48 months
1–12 months – 36 months
13–24 months – 24 months
25–36 months – 12 months
37+ months – Not eligible

Application Process:
Applications are submitted through academic departments. Departments recommend selected students to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS), which reviews and issues final decisions via email.
