Up to $360,000 for Agricultural Innovation – Moonshots for Development Open Innovation Challenge 🌍🌱

  • Competitions
  • Anywhere

Are you developing a solution that supports smallholder farmers, rural communities, or indigenous populations? The Moonshots for Development (M4D) Open Innovation Challenge is now accepting applications — offering up to $360,000 in funding and support for groundbreaking agricultural innovations.

This initiative is powered by leading global development institutions including International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Asian Development Bank (ADB), IDB Lab, CGIAR (through its Accelerate for Impact Platform), European Space Agency (ESA), and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), among others.

Focus: Building Resilient Food Systems

The challenge seeks innovations that strengthen resilient food systems across four key agricultural tracks:

1️⃣ Insurance Solutions for Resilient Food Systems

Innovations that:

  • Improve access to climate, crop, or livestock insurance
  • Reduce insurance costs using digital platforms
  • Build trust, transparency, and adoption among farmers
  • Increase resilience to climate shocks

This is particularly relevant for smallholder farmers facing climate risks.

2️⃣ Reducing the Drivers of Fragility

Solutions that:

  • Strengthen resilience in fragile rural contexts
  • Address root causes of vulnerability
  • Promote inclusive, conflict-sensitive agricultural development
  • Maintain service delivery during crises

Projects must show how they reduce fragility affecting farmers and rural communities.

3️⃣ Digital Extension for Accountable Service Delivery

Innovations such as:

  • Data-driven agricultural advisory platforms
  • Automated decision-support systems
  • Digital extension tools that improve efficiency and inclusion
  • Solutions that strengthen local agricultural institutions

Digital tools must be context-appropriate, especially in areas with limited internet access and high feature phone usage.

4️⃣ Agroecology for Climate-Resilient Systems

Innovations that support:

  • Sustainable production practices
  • Soil fertility management and restoration
  • Bio-inputs and biocontrol solutions
  • Climate-resilient farming systems
  • Agroecological certification and traceability
  • Circular resource use
  • Access to adapted genetic materials
  • Geospatial and Earth observation tools tailored for smallholders

This track strongly supports transitions toward sustainable and climate-smart agriculture.

Cross-Cutting Themes

The Challenge encourages solutions that integrate:

  • Geospatial analysis
  • AI for Good (AI-driven prediction, modeling, personalized advisory services, data interpretation)

Agri-tech innovators using AI, remote sensing, and digital agriculture tools are strongly encouraged to apply.

Funding & Support Structure

Selected teams progress through multiple phases:

  • Phase 0: Virtual bootcamp + 1 month mentorship
  • Phase 1: Up to $10,000 + tailored coaching
  • Phase 2: Up to $100,000 + pilot & implementation support
  • Phase 3: Up to $250,000 + scaling support

Total potential support: Up to $360,000

Who Should Apply?

This opportunity is ideal for:

  • Agri-tech startups
  • Climate-smart agriculture innovators
  • Insurance technology providers
  • NGOs developing digital extension tools
  • Enterprises promoting agroecology
  • Organizations serving fragile rural communities

Solutions must clearly demonstrate impact for smallholder farmers and rural households.

Deadline

Applications close March 30, 2026.

Why This Matters for Agriculture in Africa & Other Developing Regions

Smallholder farmers continue to face:

  • Climate shocks
  • Weak extension systems
  • Limited access to insurance
  • Fragile rural institutions
  • Poor market integration

This challenge provides both funding and strategic institutional backing to pilot and scale solutions that directly address these systemic agricultural constraints.

For organizations working in digital agriculture, agroecology, rural finance, or climate resilience, this is a high-impact opportunity worth exploring.
