The World Food Prize is the most prestigious international award recognizing exceptional achievements that advance human development by increasing the quantity, quality, availability, or access to food. Established to honor creative interventions across the food system, the Prize celebrates individuals whose work has had a demonstrable impact on reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and enhancing food security for millions worldwide.

Fields of achievement include:

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominee must be living and in good health to attend the Award Ceremony.
  • Nominee must be able to deliver an acceptance speech and participate in media events and the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute.
  • The Prize is intended for one person, but in rare cases, joint nominations may be considered if each nominee’s contribution was indispensable.
  • Achievements must demonstrate measurable impact in terms of:
    • Increased food production, availability, or access.
    • Reduced poverty, hunger, or suffering.
    • Improved health, nutrition, and quality of life.
  • The achievement must be directly attributable to the nominee’s actions without their contribution, the change would not have occurred.

The Prize seeks nominations for:

  • Agricultural scientists and innovators.
  • Researchers advancing food systems and nutrition.
  • Leaders in rural development and poverty reduction.
  • Policy experts and advocates shaping food security strategies.
  • Professionals whose work has transformed farming, food distribution, or sustainability.

Winners receive:

  • The World Food Prize Medal and Award Ceremony recognition in Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Global visibility and participation in the World Food Prize Week events.
  • Engagement with international leaders, researchers, and youth at the Global Youth Institute.

Nomination Documentation

Applicants must submit:

  • A detailed nomination statement outlining the nominee’s achievement and its measurable impact.
  • Supporting evidence showing how the achievement increased food security.
  • Curriculum Vitae of the nominee.
  • Letters of support from individuals or organizations familiar with the nominee’s work.

Nomination & Selection Procedure

  • Nominations must be submitted online via the official portal.
  • The World Food Prize Selection Committee reviews all nominations.
  • Evaluation is based on the significance, measurable impact, and originality of the achievement.
  • Both successful and unsuccessful candidates are notified by email.
