The Al-Sumait Prize in Food Security is a prestigious annual award that recognizes individuals or institutions for their exceptional contributions to food security, health, and education in Africa. The award, established in honor of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician dedicated to improving health and education in Africa, aims to highlight impactful efforts that advance sustainable development across the continent.

Prize Value:

  • $1,000,000 (One million US dollars)

Award Focus Areas:

  • Developing new seed, crop, or livestock varieties to enhance food security and nutrition.

  • Improving smallholder farmers’ access to agricultural resources, technologies, and markets.

  • Enhancing resilience to climate change and extreme weather.

  • Reducing food waste and loss in Africa’s agrifood systems.

  • Promoting digitalization and modern business strategies in food security and nutrition.

  • Addressing gender equality and women’s empowerment in food security.

Eligibility:

  • Nominations are accepted for innovative research or projects in the above areas, with high impact in Africa.

  • Research outcomes must have been applied within the past 10 years in African countries.

  • Nominations must come from competent institutions like universities, scientific research centers, and UN organizations.
