The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is hosting a two-day virtual media workshop on October 21–22, 2026, focused on forest governance. This training is designed to strengthen journalists’ knowledge of forest governance issues and improve reporting on sustainable forest management challenges and solutions.

Workshop Overview
Forest governance is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of Africa’s climate action, biodiversity conservation, and poverty reduction strategies. Governments are transferring forest management rights to local communities, creating opportunities for inclusive participation and responsible investment.
Despite progress, challenges remain: weak law enforcement, limited transparency, insufficient stakeholder inclusion, and the marginalization of women and Indigenous Peoples. This workshop will equip journalists to report effectively on these issues and amplify the voices of vulnerable groups.
Key Learning Areas
Participants will gain skills to:
- Understand global forest commitments and accountability gaps.
- Report on EUDR, REDD+, and the Global Biodiversity Framework with practical guidance.
- Investigate forest governance failures including weak enforcement and transparency gaps.
- Explore commodity-driven deforestation in cocoa, mining, and logging.
- Analyze community forestry and REDD+ in practice.
- Develop investigative reporting skills using data visualization, monitoring tools, and cross-border collaboration.
Eligibility
- Open to journalists from any African country, with preference for Ghana, Liberia, and Cameroon.
- Journalists from FRC consumer markets (EU, UK, China, India) are also encouraged to apply.
- Applicants may work in print, radio, TV, online, or multimedia. Freelancers and staff from community, local, national, or international outlets are welcome.
- Women, rural reporters, Indigenous journalists, and early-career professionals are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Applicants must have good English proficiency and reliable internet access.

- Format: Virtual (Zoom)
- Dates: October 21–22, 2026
- Duration: 4 hours per day (9:00 AM–1:00 PM GMT)
- Capacity: ~30 journalists
- Certificate: Participants who attend all sessions will receive a certificate of completion.
- Support: Limited communications stipends available for those with unstable internet connections.
