The Columbia Climate School invites applications for its Postdoctoral Research Program, opening September 2, 2026. This premier program supports innovative scholars dedicated to advancing solutions to climate change and global sustainable development challenges.
Program Overview
The program provides postdoctoral researchers with opportunities to:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research with world-class scientists.
- Join multidisciplinary teams across Columbia’s Climate School, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University Medical Center, and affiliated departments.
- Develop expertise in sustainability, environment, social justice, and geosciences.
- Advance practical responses to climate and sustainable development issues.
Research Focus Areas
Applicants are encouraged to propose projects in the Climate School’s foundational knowledge areas:
- Earth Systems and Sustainability – understanding climate variability, biodiversity loss, and energy transition.
- Social Systems and Justice – addressing climate justice, poverty reduction, and inclusive governance.
- Analytics for Action – using data science, AI, and innovative methods to drive climate solutions.
Application Guidelines
Applicants must:
- Submit an online application and a research proposal contributing to global sustainable development.
- Identify and contact a multidisciplinary mentoring team (two or more Columbia faculty or research scientists).
- Demonstrate potential to contribute to cross-disciplinary research and publish impactful work.
