The Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) has announced a new funding opportunity to support groundbreaking research into the interconnections between crop and animal systems. Through the Crop-Animal Systems Research Request for Applications (RFA), FFAR is offering up to $4 million in total funding, with individual awards ranging from $300,000 to $1 million, contingent on matching contributions from non-federal sources.

Purpose of the Grant

This RFA aims to simultaneously advance crop and animal systems by encouraging collaborative, cross-disciplinary research. While these systems are often studied independently, FFAR recognizes their deep interconnections — from feed efficiency to nutrient cycling.

Research Areas of Interest Include:

  • Development of resource-efficient animal feed

  • Innovations in animal nutrition

  • Bioaccumulation of contaminants in both systems

  • Nutrient cycling between crops and livestock

  • Effective crop rotation with grazing

  • Application of circular agriculture principles

  • Other relevant innovations that advance crop-animal systems

Key Details:

  • Pre-application deadline: June 11, 2025

  • Informational webinar: May 20, 2025, at 11 a.m. EDT (registration required)

  • Eligible applicants: Domestic and international institutions (higher education, nonprofits, for-profits, U.S. government-affiliated research agencies)

  • Matching funds required: Dairy Management Inc. and the United Soybean Board may provide matching support for qualifying projects
