Each year, the Gates Cambridge Trust offers approximately 80 full-cost scholarships to exceptional applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree (Master’s or PhD) at the University of Cambridge.

• About two-thirds of the awards are for PhD applicants

• Scholarships are offered in two rounds:

  • US Round (approximately 25 awards)

  • International Round (approximately 55 awards)

Scholarship Coverage

Core Components

• Full University Composition Fee

• Maintenance allowance of £21,000 per year (2024–25 rate)

• One return economy airfare

• Inbound visa costs and Immigration Health Surcharge

Discretionary Components (upon application)

• Academic development funding (£500–£2,000)

• Dependent children allowance (up to £16,548)

• Fieldwork maintenance support

• Maternity or paternity leave (up to 6 months with stipend)

• Hardship funding

Note: The scholarship does not cover bench fees or the cost of scientific equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom

• Must apply to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge
