Overview
The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has launched the CSO Challenge Program. This initiative identifies, rewards, and scales innovative environmental solutions led by civil society organizations (CSOs) that deliver measurable global benefits for both people and the planet.

Strategic Focus Areas
CSOs are invited to submit proposals in one of the following five priority areas:
- Community-based ecosystem management – Protecting threatened ecosystems and species.
- Sustainable agriculture and fisheries – Enhancing food security through climate-smart practices.
- Low-carbon energy access – Expanding renewable energy solutions.
- Chemicals and waste management – Reducing pollution and improving safe disposal.
- Sustainable urban solutions – Promoting greener cities and communities.
Funding and Support
Selected CSOs will receive:
- Up to USD $300,000 in direct grant funding for projects lasting up to 24 months.
- Tailored technical support for program design, risk management, and private sector engagement.
- Capacity building and collaboration opportunities to share knowledge, increase visibility, and build partnerships.
Eligibility
- Civil society organizations working in the listed strategic areas.
- Projects must demonstrate innovation, scalability, and measurable global benefits.
- Applicants must apply through the online grants portal.
Application Process
- Review eligibility criteria on the GEF SGP portal.
- Prepare a concept note and supporting documents.
- Submit proposals online by 20 July 2026.
