The John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) is a competitive, merit‑based program that provides postgraduate scholarships (Masters by Research or PhD) to agricultural scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries. The fellowship strengthens research capacity and institutional links, enabling high‑quality, impactful agricultural research that addresses pressing global challenges.

Agric and Climate Focus

Agriculture, fisheries, and food systems are on the front line of climate change. Recognizing this, the 2026 intake will allocate places specifically for research dedicated to:

  • Climate Change Adaptation: Developing climate‑resilient agricultural practices.
  • Strengthening Food Systems: Research that supports sustainable production and market systems.
  • Resilience Building: Strategies to defend against climate‑induced loss and damage in agriculture.

This makes the fellowship especially relevant for agricultural researchers working on innovations that improve productivity, sustainability, and resilience in the Indo‑Pacific region.

Awardees receive:

  • Scholarships: Masters by Research or PhD at an Australian tertiary institution.
  • Capacity Development: Pastoral care and training to build transferable skills for career advancement.
  • Global Networks: Strengthened institutional links between ACIAR partner countries and Australia.
  • Gender Equity Commitment: At least half of new fellows are women, ensuring inclusive participation in agricultural research.
