Closing date (final cycle): 15 April 2026

The Swansea University International Postgraduate Research Excellence Scholarship (SUIPRES) is a competitive award for overseas applicants to eligible PhD and Professional Doctorate programmes. SUIPRES is designed to recruit excellent international research candidates by offsetting the difference between international and UK (home) tuition fee rates for the full duration of the doctoral programme.

Key benefits

  • Scholarship covers the difference between International and Home tuition fee rates for the duration of your PhD / Professional Doctorate.

  • Successful candidates will be charged the UK (home) fee rate per year (applicants must still demonstrate funds to cover remaining fees and living costs).

Eligibility (summary)

To be eligible you must:

  • Be an international applicant (eligible to pay the international tuition rate).

  • Apply for an eligible PhD or Professional Doctorate programme at Swansea University.

  • Hold, or expect to hold, a First Class or 2:1 UK undergraduate degree (or equivalent), or a Distinction in a UK master’s (or international equivalent).

  • Demonstrate excellence beyond grades (research promise, prizes, teaching, outreach, publications, etc.).

  • Not be a current PhD/Professional Doctorate student at Swansea (transfers/returning students are not eligible).

  • Not be fully sponsored by a third party (fully sponsored candidates are ineligible).

  • January 2026 enrolment — deadline: 15 October 2025

  • April 2026 enrolment — deadline: 15 January 2026

  • July 2026 enrolment — deadline: 15 April 2026final cycle / closing date

  2. In your application statement demonstrate excellence: academic record, prizes, teaching, outreach, research experience, publications, or related achievements.

  3. You will be informed about the scholarship decision within your offer letter if successful.

Practical notes

  • The scholarship is offset against tuition fees (it reduces what you pay; it is not a cash stipend).

  • Applicants must confirm they can fund any remaining tuition fees and living costs for the full registration period.

  • The SUIPRES scheme is not available for master’s programmes.

  • Departments handle informal enquiries — contact the relevant faculty for subject-specific questions.
