Overview
The University of Birmingham, in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign, invites applications for the Global South Fellowship Program. This initiative supports the professional development of early‑career researchers from universities in the Global South, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and long‑term partnerships.
Aims of the Scheme
The fellowship enables visiting researchers to:
- Gain insight into the organisation and conduct of research, training, and administration at leading universities.
- Build collaborative research partnerships and networks.
- Advance scholarship in priority areas such as:
- Education access and equity
- Global health
- Sustainability and climate action
Funding and Support
- Travel expenses up to £850.
- Monthly stipend of £1,500 for up to three months.
- Support with accommodation arrangements (on‑campus or private options).
Fellowship Period
- Between July 2026 and June 2027 (funding available for three months within this period).
Eligibility
- Applicants must have completed a doctorate (Ph.D.).
- Defined as early‑career researchers, relative to discipline and career stage.
- Must be affiliated with a university in the Global South.
Application Process
- Deadline: 29 May 2026
- Results Announced: 25 June 2026
- Applicants should identify and contact a suitable host researcher at the University of Birmingham or University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign before applying.
- Applications must be submitted via the University of Birmingham portal.
