CHINNOVA Second Call for Proposals – Strengthening Climate‑Resilient Health Systems in West and Central Africa

Overview

The Climate Change and Health Innovation Hub for West and Central Africa (CHINNOVA) has launched its Second Call for Proposals to support collaborative research and innovation projects that strengthen climate‑resilient health systems. This initiative builds on the success of the first call in 2025, which attracted over 200 submissions and committed USD 700,000 to selected projects.

The new call will fund projects implemented between 2026 and 2028, focusing on interdisciplinary, policy‑relevant research that delivers tangible impact for communities and health systems across the region.

Priority Research Areas

Proposals should address one or more of the following themes:

  • Strengthening health systems preparedness and response to climate‑related risks
  • Advancing climate and health data systems, including early warning mechanisms
  • Addressing climate‑sensitive diseases and related health outcomes
  • Promoting gender equality and inclusion in climate‑health research
  • Enhancing community engagement and risk communication
  • Driving policy and institutional innovation for climate‑resilient health systems

Funding and Eligibility

  • Total Funding Available: USD 1,000,000
  • Number of Projects: Minimum of 5
  • Grant Size: Up to USD 200,000 per project
  • Duration: 24 months (2026–2028)

Eligible applicants include:

  • Universities
  • Accredited research institutes
  • NGOs with a research mandate
  • Other institutions engaged in climate and health research

Eligible Countries

Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea‑Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

CHINNOVA is part of the Advancing Research for Climate and Health programme, funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Implemented by a consortium led by the Association of African Universities, CHINNOVA serves as a regional platform for collaboration, capacity strengthening, and knowledge exchange.
