Overview
The Thrive Seed Grant provides funding to initiatives outside the USA that accelerate alternatives to industrial animal agriculture, create plant-rich food systems, and increase access to or awareness of nutritious plant-based foods. Equity is at the center of Thrive’s giving, with strong encouragement for proposals led by women, people of colour, and marginalized persons.
Funding Details
- Grant Amount: Up to USD $5,000
- Target Applicants: New or small-scale organizations, one-time projects, conference sponsorships, individuals without nonprofit status, or applicants who have not received Thrive funding before.
- Application Deadlines: Quarterly – 1 March, 1 June, 1 September, 1 December (11:59 PM GMT)
- Response Time: Up to 8 weeks after each deadline
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be based outside the United States (international chapters of US-based organizations are not eligible).
- Align with Thrive Philanthropy’s safespace policy.
- Demonstrate a positive reputation with stakeholders and community.
- Not be for-profit companies.
- Have organizational budgets under USD $500,000.
Special Note for Africa-Based Applicants
Due to high demand, Africa-based proposals are accepted by invitation only or by previous grantees. New applicants from Africa are encouraged to join the Thrive Africa Accelerator, which builds networks and increases chances of future invitations.
Ineligible Projects
- Cellular agriculture work
- Initiatives supporting or impartial to animal exploitation
- For-profit companies (including restaurants)
- Food banks, giveaways, hunger-relief programs
- Farmed animal welfare campaigns
- Animal farming or projects using animal products
- Political parties or candidate endorsements
- Gardening projects not tied to reducing factory farm demand
- Tuition, student research, or university fees
- Work within the USA or international chapters of US organizations
Application Process
- Applications must be submitted online via Thrive’s portal.
- Emailed proposals are not accepted.
- Organizations typically receive one grant per year.
